In Hyderabad, amidst controversy surrounding the Tirupati laddu, artisans near Tirumala are preparing to seek a geographical indication tag for their intricately carved wooden statues of Lord Balaji and other deities. The Madhavamala wood carvings are renowned for their detailed craftsmanship, depicting figures like Kalyana Balaji and Raja and Rani dolls, as well as various decorative items. The Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, representing 510 artisans from 309 families, will submit the GI application with support from NABARD. This will mark the 20th GI application from Andhra Pradesh, facilitated by GI practitioner Subhajit Saha and NABARD.
